Descendants of Peter Lee, Sr. Generation No. 1 1. PETER1 LEE, SR. was born Abt. 1770 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1854 in White County, Illinois. He married MARGARET EOFF 16 Jun 1796 in Madison County, Kentucky, daughter of PETER EOFF and ELIZABETH ?. She was born Abt. 1773 in Chester County, South Carolina, and died Unknown in ?. Notes for PETER LEE, SR.: On the back of a photo of George H. Lee and his wife Lounica, it was written that George's father was born in Ireland. In the Lee family file at MCHGS, there are some papers written by Lucille Jeffers referring to some of the descendants of Reese Lee. It is mentioned within these papers that Reese's father was born in Ireland. Places of Residence: Madison Co. KY, Pulaski Co. KY, Bedford Co. TN, Shelby Co. IL, White Co. IL. The following information was from Dolly Anderson, (1037 Hansom Drive; St. Louis, MO 63137-1815; (314)869-5905.:
There were two men names Peter Lee in the early records of Kentucky, both whom married in Madison County, Kentucky. One married Margaret Eoff in 1796, and the other married Catherine "Katy" McGuire in 1806. One moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky, and the other one remained in Madison County, Kentucky at least through 1810. It has been difficult to keep their records separate. Apparently, both men migrated to Bedford County, Tennessee, where one stayed until his death, the other removing to Illinois.
PETER AND MARGARET (EOFF) LEE: Peter Lee Peter Lee was born in Virginia in 1770. He married Margaret Eoff in Madison County, in 1796 and reportedly migrated to White County, Illinois. Peter Lee was taxed in 1797, the year after his marriage, in Madison County, Kentucky, on one white poll and three horses, living next to Drury Lee, but he was not present after that date in Madison County. In 1799 and 1800 it would seem that he was the Peter Lee who was taxed in Pulaski County, among a group of Lee men who had come from Madison County. In 1801, he was listed with 100 acres of land entered by Drury Lee, one white poll and four horses. In 1802, he was taxed on 90 acres of land, one white poll and two horses. He was similarly taxed from 1803 to 1809. In 1810, he was taxed in Pulaski County in one white poll and seven horses, but he had no land. He did not appear after that date. In 1810, Peter Lee was enumerated in the census of Pulaski County, Kentucky. He and his wife were 26 to 45 years of age. Four apparent sons lived with them (p. 156). There were two men named Peter Lee on the 1812 tax list of Bedford County, Tennessee. In 1820, only one Peter Lee was enumerated in the census of Bedford County, Tennessee. It is difficult to determine his age from the census because there were three adult males in his household. It would seem that two families were living together. There was a male and a female over the age of 45, another male and female aged 26 to 45, another male 16 to 26, two females 10 to 16, three males and a female under the age of ten. Some researchers believe that both Peter Lees were living in this household, which is possible. Peter Lee was reportedly in the 1830 census of Shelby County, Illinois, and in the 1840 census of White County, Illinois. He is reportedly listed in the 1850 census of White County, IL. as Peter Lee, Sr., aged 80 and born in Virginia with wife Margaret, age 77, born in South Carolina. He died in White County in 1854. Children of Peter (Eoff) Lee: 1. Male, b. 1800-1810. 2. Male, b. 1800-1810 3. Male, b. 1800-1810. PETER AND CATHERINE (McGuire) LEE Peter Lee was born between the years of 1780 and 1790 (1830 and 1840 census, Bedford County, Tennessee). Peter's wife of later years was Catherine, who was born in 1790. Peter Lee married Catherine "Katy" McGuire in 1806, which was the year that Peter Lee first appeared on the tax lists of Madison County, paying a poll tax, next to Thomas Lee. In 1808, Peter was taxed on 307 acres of third rate land on Silver Creek. In 1809, Peter was taxed on 40 acres of second rate land on Silver Creek and 307 acres of third rate land. On October 2, 1809, Peter Lee and Catherine, his wife of Madison County, sold 53 acres of land on Taylor's fork of Silver Creek to James Runkle (Madison County, KY DB G:293-4). This deed indicated that Peter Lee was selling all of his interest in the land. There was no Peter Lee listed in the 1810 census index for Madison County, Kentucky. On May 5, 1812, a trust deed for 50 acres of land on the waters of Silver Creek, Madison County, was executed by Elijah Hendron to Peter Lee (Madison County, Ky DB I:45-6). In 1812, five different Lee men paid a poll tax in Bedford County, Tennessee - John, Peter (2), Robert, and William. Isaac, Joseph, and William Eoff also paid a poll tax, all in James Walker's Company. One of the two Peter Lees was also in Walker's Company. The other Peter Lee was listed in John Sutton's Company, right next to William Lee. Deeds in Bedford County list both William Lee and Peter Lee as adjoining land owners, although records for the purchase of their lands were not found. The area where they lived was on Garrison Fork, which later became Rutherford and then Coffee County. In 1820, only one Peter Lee was enumerated in the census of Bedford County, Tennessee. It is difficult to determine his age from the census because there were three adult males in his househole (See Peter & Margaret (Eoff) Lee section above for further explaination of those listed in household). Peter's wife was Catherine Lee. Catherine was born in 1790, in Kentucky. (1850 census Bedford County, TN CD 3 #77). John Lee was also enumerated in the census in 1820 in Bedford County. In 1830, Peter Lee was enumerated in the census of Bedford County, Tennessee. He and his wife were listed as 40 to 50 years of age. There were two apparent daughters and six apparent sons living with them. (p. 67). Thomas Lee lived nearby as did John Lee. In 1836, William Lee paid a poll tax in Civil District 3 of Bedford County. Peter Lee was listed next to William and Peter paid a tax on 200 acres of land and one slave. He paid no white poll tax, an indication that he was an older man or an absentee land owner. In 1840, Peter was enumerated in the census of Bedford County, Tennessee (p. 16). He was 50 to 60 years of age and his apparent wife was 40 to 50 years of age. In his household were three apparent sons and one femal aged 5 to 10. On May 4, 1842, Peter Lee was the recipient of a deed of trust exectued by James H. Arnold relating to the death of Hugh Snelling (Land Deed Genealogy of Bedford County, Tennessee 1807-1852 by Helen and Timothy Marsh, p. 294.) Peter served as administrator of the estate of HughSnelling in Bedford County, but died before he could complete his duties (Chancery Court Records of Bedford County by Timothy and Helen Marsh, p. 96-7, 102-3, 182-183). In this suit, Lousia H. Arnold, wife of James H. Arnold, is identified in one place as the granddaughter of Hugh Snelling and in another place as a daughter. Louisa deposed that she inherited slaves from her grandfather in right of her mother, a daughter of Hugh Snelling, who was married to Peter Lee. The name of the mother was not lmentioned. However, since Hugh Snelling died intestate, Louisa would not have inherited had her mother been living. One Peter Lee was deceased by October 29, 1844, when James Lee sold to Catherine Lee all of his interest in the estate of Peter Lee deceased (Land Deed Genealogy of Bedford County, Tennessee 1807-1852 by Helen and Timothy Marsh, p. 339). A deed dated December 12, 1848, as the result of a court decree to Robert T. Cannon, for 137 acres of land named the widow Catherine and the heirs of Peter Lee deceased (Land Deed Genealogy of Bedford County, Tennessee 1807-1852 by Helen and Timothy Marsh, p. 404). The land was located in Distract 3 of Bedford County. On February 21, 1850, a similar deed was written for the dower allotted to Catherine Lee as widow of Peter Lee (Land Deed Genealogy of Bedford County, Tennessee by Helen and Timothy Marsh, p.421). Mary Lee and Peter Lee signed this deed, indicating that they were of age. Catherine Lee was enumerated in the 1850 census of Bedford County, living in Civil Distract 3 (#77). She listed her age as 60 and her place of birth as Kentucky. Living with her were John, Peter and Mary. The birth places of all three children were given as Kentucky, although this seems unlikely. The children of Peter and Catherine Lee: 1. Melinda; m. Glaiborne Bowles 2. Elizabeth; m. Calaway Walker 3. William M., b. 1815-1820 4. James H., b. 1815-1820 5. John S., b. 1820 (1823) 6. Green D., b. 1825 TN; m. ca. 1842 Jane; Children: Martha, C. (1846), Nancy (1848) (1850 census Bedford County, TN # 76) 7. Lucy, m. King 8. Peter, b. 1829 (minor in 1848, of age in 1850). 9. Mary, b. 1827 (minor in 1848, of agein 1850). ******************* According to Debbie McArdle, Peter Lee, Sr. - 1850 Census, White Co., IL - fam#628 More About PETER LEE, SR.: Source (a): Interview w/ Maude Lee Carlyle: B Phillippo, 1972 Notes for MARGARET EOFF: The Eoff family was German and came to this country ca. 1710.
